EyeBlack is a sports marketing company where Peter and his team produce eye black, not the stuff that we used to see smeared all over faces of athletes, but instead a patch, a product that is used by fans and athletes alike. Since the first testing days EyeBlack has truly taken off. For the athletes the product is used to reduce glare, but Peter also turned to his creative side and began putting team logos on the EyeBlack patch, so for the fans it was designed to get them fired up and support their teams. If you don't have your Game Face on already, this is one interview that will show you the way.

Marc Ross takes us behind-the-scenes and shares his journey from internship to Vice President. Most importantly, Marc answers the questions many aspiring people have who are seeking a job in professional sports. Persistence, hard work and a willingness to perform even the most simplest of tasks, Marc provides important lessons in order to both enter and then climb the ladder of the front offices in the National Football League. Listen in as Marc, who just returned from the NFL Draft, walks us through the holistic approach that goes into the player selection process.

Marc grew up in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania as the youngest of 4 and enjoyed playing sports with his neighborhood friends. He played multiple sports through high school and then focused on becoming a student-athlete at Princeton University where he enjoyed a successful NCAA Division I experience, playing wide receiver for the Tigers on the gridiron of the football field.

Marc knew that he wanted to continue to be involved in the world of sports but knew he was not destined to play in the NFL. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Sport Management Program, March eventually landed an internship with the New York Giants in public relations. The internship provided him with an incredible opportunity to join the team full time and work as an intern with the Philadelphia Eagles and later the Buffalo Bills. He is now back working with the Giants as Vice President of Player Evaluation, helping one of the most successful franchises in sports over the past decade to achieve incredible success.

Devard Shares The Hot Tub With Deion Sanders.

Direct download: Devard_Darling_Exclusive_Access_Final_1_mixdown_with_tag.mp3
Category:general -- posted at: 9:54am EDT

Devard Darling is from a family of professional and Olympic athletes, so it is no surprise that Devard and his twin brother, Devaughn knew at a very young age that they were both going to play in the NFL one day. The vision quickly became reality when the twins joined accepted scholarships to play football as student-athletes at Florida State University, one of the premier NCAA Division I programs in the country. It was time to study and play college football, but playing professional football in the NFL was clearly in sight.

Tragically, however, Devard physically lost his twin brother, Devaughn during a spring football practice at Florida State University from over-exhaustion and dehydration, triggering the Sickle cell trait that both brothers share. Although Devaughn was physically gone from Devard's life, Devard resolved to continued the path and harness Devaughn's spiritual being, pushing forward with his professional career.

To put salt on he and his family's wounds, FSU made a statement that the University would honor Devard's academic scholarship, but would not allow him to compete in collegiate athletics due to the 'risk' now involved from his brother's passing.

So, Devard transferred to Washington State and was then drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2004. His career includes playing Wide Receiver for the Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans. More importantly, Devard started the "As One Foundation" to educate others and help them avoid any possibility of sharing Devaughn's fate. Devard is currently running the "As One Foundation" and working at Altruista in Texas, providing financial stability to professional athletes. Although Devaughn is buried in a full FSU football uniform, he will always be by Devard’s side, emotionally and spiritually.

Cliff is the founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals as well as the Celebrity Players Tour and has played on the Celebrity Golf Tour for 15 years where he won events in Jamaica and Baltimore. After Cliff retired, he wrote 'Acing Depression: A Tennis Champion's Toughest Match,' with his daughter Hilaire Kallendorf. Depression was a major obstacle for Cliff. This episode is a great reminder of what we all see on the outside is not always what is happening on the inside. Ironically, while his journey in the world of Tennis continued to become more successful, the more depressed Cliff became.

Despite all of his individual success, Cliff is most proud of two facts. One, that he and his sister Nancy, herself a hall of fame tennis player, formed the best brother/sister combination in the history of tennis. Two, that he is now a huge advocate for speaking to others about depression and continuing to make the public aware of one of the common diseases in the United States, if not, the world.

Jan shares story of how simple, yet powerful a few words of encouragement can be inspiring.

Category:general -- posted at: 8:17am EDT

Born in Fetsund, in the county of Akershus, Norway, NFL Hall Of Famer, Jan Stenerud came to the United States as a college student, on a ski jumping scholarship to Montana State University in Bozeman.

In the fall of 1964, Stenerud was training for the upcoming ski season by running the stadium steps. That day, he was cooling down from a workout by kicking a football with injured halfback Dale Jackson. Stenerud had played soccer as a youth in Norway, and his right leg's prowess was observed by basketball head coach Roger Craft, while he walked to the nearby Fieldhouse. Craft notified football head coach Jim Sweeney of the Norwegian ski jumper's kicking abilities, and Sweeney offered him a tryout, which was successful.

Though ineligible for football competition that season, Sweeney encouraged Stenerud to suit up with the team for the final home game of 1964. Following the ski season, Stenerud joined the football team in 1965 and as a junior that fall he kicked a 59-yard field goal, then a college football record.

He was named an All-American by The Sporting News as a senior in 1966, and was also an All-American in ski jumping and a three-time Big Sky champion. Stenerud was one of the first professional football players to be used as a dedicated kicker, because of his excellent "sharpshooting" ball-kicking performance.

He was one of the first placekickers to use the "soccer style", a technique the Hungarian-born Pete Gogolak had recently introduced in the AFL. During his first three years as professional, the last seasons for the AFL, Stenerud hit 70% of his field goals, compared with a 53% average for the other kickers in the AFL and NFL.

A Note from George Visger:

I played for San Francisco, developed hydrocephalus from concussions during the 81 Super Bow" season, and underwent emergency VP Shunt brain surgery. Now on brain surgery # 9 after surviving surgeries # 4 thru #7 in 1987 while completing a Biology degree. Went on as a wildlife biologist from 90 - 97, taught HS science, chemistry and math for two years, back to Biology, and started an Environmental Consulting firm in 2003. In 2010 we launched The Visger Group, Traumatic Brain Injury consulting. I developed hydrocephalus and underwent VP shunt brain surgery while playing DT for the 1981 SF 49ers Super Bowl champs. I had suffered a major concussion in the prior year (80) against the Dallas Cowboys but never missed a play by use of 20+ smelling salts the trainers and doctors used on me during the game.

My shunt failed 4 months after our Super Bowl XVI victory, was brought to the hospital in a coma. Survived two more brain surgeries 10 hrs apart and given last rites (also given the hospital bills but that's another story). In 1986 I returned to school to complete my Biology degree. Survived 4 more brain surgeries and several gran mal seizures during a 10-month period in 1987. All the while taking Organic, Physics and Pre-Calc courses. Graduated in 1990 at age 32 with a BS in Biological Conservation, surgery induced dyslexia and major short term memory deficits and began my career as a wildlife biologist/environmental consultant. In 2009, due to major memory issues, my primary care advised me to file for SSI, turn in my drivers license and get my finances in order. At the time they had me on Lexapro, Ambien (had gone up to 4 nights straight with no sleep due to inflammation in my brain) and 3 dementia meds (Arricept, Namenda and Resperdal).

Instead of turning it in, I attended a 3 day neuro psych evaluation at Dr Amen's clinic in So Cal. He started me on hyperbaric oxygen treatments, and I began coordinating directly with Dr Barry Sears, and using mega doses (12 - 16 gm/day) of Sears Omega 3's and his natural anti oxidants, concentrated blueberry, cranberry and acaiberry juices in capsules. Since I started my treatment program, and through neuro plasticity activities, my micro cognitive memory scores have improved over 15%. And I'll be 55 in Sept.

I don't buy into the bunk that once brain damaged thats all there is. We only use ~ 5% - 10% of our brain. We just need to repair damaged areas and awaken sequestered neurons.

Pat Burke has a lot to teach about coaching and playing sports, and learning the life lessons from them. Pat has dedicated his career to helping young athletes learn these very lessons; and he’s in a great position to do so.

Pat played for 12 seasons in the NBA, but his road there was not a perfect path. This interview allows listeners the opportunity to hear about Pat’s journey, starting from playing ice hockey at 6 foot 7 inches tall and then making the switch over to basketball. Pat share personal stories about his experiences with the NBA Draft, playing basketball in Europe and the difficult decisions he had to make along the way.

Pat’s motto, getting better every day defines an athlete and a gentleman who embodies that approach. Facing adversity, challenging yourself, knowing your role, being a great communicator – all of this and more comes to light in a fantastic interview with Pat Burke. To use his own words, Pat was never an All-Star in the NBA, but he most certainly is an All-Star in helping us understand the incredible life lessons that come from sports.

I know I learned many things from this interview, so join me as we listen to Pat walks us through a journey not to be forgotten.

Ever heard of the Ralston Rule? Many have not, in fact, some call it an urban legend, but the rule is intact today due to what Dennis did? Do you agree with the action he took?

Dennis Ralston paid a high price for life as the U.S.’s No. 1-ranked tennis player three straight years in the ’60s. The expectations that nearly crushed him were the least of it. Dennis has won and lost at Wimbledon, has been Ranked in the Top 3 in the world and has had the success a tennis professional could only dream about.

However all of that put aside, Dennis is a legend, a legend who is able to communicate the successes and challenges of life on and off the court. Dennis Ralston had the first of 16 knee operations when he was 18. The last two, a replacement for each knee, were a half-century later. As if that weren’t enough, tennis also took his left leg just below the artificial knee. The physical cost came to 16 knee operations, the first when he was only 18. The last two, a replacement for each knee, were a half-century later. The irony is that his parents encouraged him not to play football due to potential knee injuries.

Ralston was one of the so-called “Handsome Eight” who changed the face of the sport, taking it from amateur to professional. One of the original bad boys of tennis. He went from “Dennis the Menace” to captain and coach of champion U.S. Davis Cup teams. A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The man who coached Chris Evert in the ’80s and Yannick Noah and Gabriela Sabatini in the ’90s and SMU for more than a decade. Ralston says he isn’t trying to prove anything by playing occasionally. He still hates losing. It annoys him that he can’t get to shots. But he’s glad he can play. He likes the notion that it might inspire the disabled.

He appreciates the opportunity to share his experiences and knwledge about his addiction, hoping that by opening up about his experience he can educate others. And he still loves tennis. Even after all it’s cost. As Dennis says, “I don’t ever want to retire. I couldn’t retire.”
